Tonight allows in the great invitation to plot our inspirations rather than limitations.

 

 

We meet here on the edge of the Solstice, were it dips into the Yule, Hanukah and Kwanza. This great dive of the light explores the sacred. Where light and shadow sit on the eve of attention, we are invited into the spaces in between were true transformation resides.

 

 

Perhaps this deep dive into opportunity, challenge, and all calls to change will allow us each to cleave off old patterns, old ways of being, and relationships that no longer up lift us. This is the shift into the evolution of our highest self.

 

 

We are thereby shifted into Evolution beyond all previous limits of the word “Resolution”. This month, this cycle will be about lining up to who we most deeply desire to both be and become, rather than creating any strict limitations to follow or fall through.

 

 

Tonight, tomorrow, create an altar that represents all spaces and places in your life you are in the pattern of lining up to, with, for, and just outside of… Perhaps on this altar will reside all things that will be climbing like the days from darker into the rising of the light and into the seen. Our job isto make sure we are seeing them clearly. This is our opportunity.

 

 

Invoke this Solstice as the sweep into a resolution of evolution…

Float Forward from Downward Dog

 

 

 

Floating forward from downward dog to the front of the mat is one of the most coveted transitions in vinyasa yoga. It is so desired for its clear expression of strength and elegance. It is a leveraged exploration of multiple key actions all in the space of maintaining a foundational experience in the body while flying through the air from there to here!


 


 


 

To Begin

To begin, understand that there is a learning curve and it is difficult until it is not. Therefore, offer yourself the permission to explore the practice of learning to float forward with love and devotion to the messy places in your life. We learn, more than flying here, to get out of our own way and marvel at our unique strength and capacity to BE the mystic on the mat.

 

Key Actions and Technique

Form wise, let’s break the key actions and technique down from the roots through the flight to the landing. We lovingly call this “flight school.”

 

In Downward-Facing Dog…

 

HANDS and ARMS:

Place the hands shoulder distance apart from one another, which means that the middle of the wrist is in a straight line relationship to the out edge of your upper arm. The stronger you get, the wider will sweep your hands.

 

Creases of the wrists should be horizontal to the front of your mat. Fingers and index knuckles each press deep and down into the mat, clawing the floor beneath you. As you press the fingers down, feel the tone rise into and through the forearms. This activation allows you to actively suck weight off of the heels of the hands.

 

Keeping toned forearms, roll the forearms towards one another.

 

With the forearms rolling towards one another, roll the upper arms away from each other. Give your ears some space.

 

BODY and CORE:

Integrate the core by toning the lower ribs into support the length of the spine. With increased flexibility in the spine, it is natural to drop the lower ribs forward, as the body naturally flows into the spaces of least resistance. However, this lower rib drop drops the top of the core forward and it becomes difficult to support the body in transition. The float forward requires that the entire core be lit up and engaged to slow the lowering of the legs between the hands.

 

FEET AND LEGS:

Step your feet a little closer, a few inches, to your hands to turn on the ability to engage momentum of the legs.

 

Bend the knees and LOOK FORWARD to the space between the hands. Holding the gaze to the space between the hands, spring BOTH feet from the earth in a pike, two strong, radiantly extended, parallel legs off the earth. The second the springing legs leave the earth, engage them to feel like two fire hoses shooting from the pelvis out the feet.

 

Return the feet to downward dog and repeat.

 

To experience the pike, one most encourage the hips to fly at the same speed as the toned forearms, which brings us to hips over heart, over shoulders, over wrists.

 

TO LOWER:

From the pike, begin to land half way up your mat with straight legs. It may feel a little jarring at first; however, it diffuses the drama and we begin to feel the possibility of landing with straight legs between the hands. As we get closer and closer, confidence grows.

 

As confidence grows and the feet beneath straight legs begin to land closer and closer to the space between the hands you will begin to experience the HOVER point of hips over wrist.

 

At this point, play with pulling the lower ribs in as deep as you can, creating space between the belly and the thighs. This degree of core integration will begin to inspire a slowing of the descent of the feet beneath the hands.

 

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Engage this transition like any huge life change with an appreciation for where you have come from, full participation in each moment as it presents itself, and in deep hope and full gaze to where you wish to land in the future.

I challenge you over this entire weekend to receive in love, gratitude, kindness at the deepest sense and source and not get stuck in the obstacles; not get stuck in old patterns that don’t serve you; not get stuck but realize you go up and over. When the senses feel like they are on overload, maybe they are just to bring you back into the center source of the stream of yourself that simply cannot be shaken, can’t be given away, can’t be bought, cannot be stolen ….

The FALL of Introspection

This is the month of transition, the month that sweeps the summer into the FALL of introspection.

 

This is a sacred month between here and there, now and then.

 

This is a month of turning the page between seasons and perhaps past patterns or ways of being. The moon cycle gets to be an invocation to inward turning, the space in between, and the gap between events of summer and winter.

 

Invoking the end of October and lighting the path into November, we are gathering the last of the harvest and beginning the tending tasks to prepare for a fortifying winter. It is never THAT you will weather the storms of life, for really, what is the alternative…. It is how do you set yourself up for such incoming spaces of life’s weather.

 

The muse of this month is the conscious participation in the creating of and maintaining of life’s patterned currents in both the inner and outer world. Are you deeply engaged in the rise and fall of your day and all the small small rises and falls that occur at all the spaces of waking in between? What are your first thoughts of the day and the last thoughts before eyes close. Is there consciousness around your sources of happiness, sadness, and senses of connectedness and contended-ness?

 

Are you aware of when thought patterns begin? What precedes them? What your alchemical descents of emotion pool into your state of being at the end? Do the emotional states of your experience blindside you, catch you unaware? Or do you feel confident in the thoughts you think and the emotional states that are activated by them?

 

A yoga practice invites us deeply into our full state of being. It is not just that we begin to interact with our bodies; we begin to interact with the thoughts we think, the feelings we feel, and the way we move in the world.

 

We will strive this month the address spaces of disconnect and dis- ease. Illness, as our book club book states, Inside Out Healing, by Ricard Moss, is not merely isolated to physical malady. Many of us have thoughts and emotional cascades that are chronically painful and in deep call for healing.

 

“The best way out of anything is through.” – Robert Frost. Let’s steep ourself in the fullness of our experience this month in thought, emotional practices, writing, and embodied movement.

 

We might just find ourselves not in the spaces we expected, but in the deliriously potent places in between.

Going to the spaces inside can take as much courage and bravery as climbing a mountain or surfing the seas. The deep canyons of the emotional self are profoundly deep and somewhat treacherous and the body is a huge archive of previous experiences, victories, love, lesson, and loss capable of hiding truth in shadow for years and years and years.

 

 

The patterns we live of well-being and illness are deeply associated with the gumption we muster to take these inner outings.

 

 

This month will be deeply provocative and supportive, as we cultivate a standing (gulp… even daily) date with ourselves to take ourselves OUT to go IN. There is great truth in the statement that ONLY YOU WILL EVER really know YOURSELF and the time to get close, to share secrets, and to express profundity is NOW.

 

 

There is a need for our inner truth to be known, contemplated and lived, as the intensity of the day-to-day world is now demanding authenticity and personal, collective leadership at an exponentiated rate.

 

 

We will leverage the skills of an embodied practice, a willingness to sit in private meditation, a conviction to eat and nourish well, and the power of writing it all down in a journal as means of revelation of our inner progressions.

 

 

May this be a month, a moon cycle of great truth and a testament to the tenacity of our practice and path. Remember, “only TRUTH IS TRUTH…” and the time for that is now… and now is the time.

In the Western World, it is so easy to see “Broken” as a problem to be solved, a travesty to be masked. When in fact, the brokenness of our very human selves is the point.

 

Our intrinsic, natural wholly human busted-ness, our cracked nature, our supreme wobbliness is how we experience the world and how we let experience move.

 

By letting experience move through us, we get to (because we never have to) release patterns of tension caused by “holding it together” and resisting change.

 

Change, our one constant companion, is a foundation of the universe. The universe is constantly and consistently giving us more and more and more. It is giving us more ideas, more import, more doubts, more fears, more lessons, more laughter, and more opportunities for tears. Essentially the universe is giving us more to think about.

 

Our human nature, our brains love thought, drama, and the drama of thought (even if consciously you would prefer not to  - the brain’s function to a great deal is TO THINK).

 

It is almost as if the universe were lovingly giving you apples. One or two you can hold without a problem. Being handed a third creates complications. Being give a fourth, a fifth, a sixth, and more and more to  an armload of apples, thoughts, and memories; it becomes challenging to be gracious, serene, to the gifts when all you can do is worry about not dropping the apples or failing in some way.

 

We hold thoughts and memories sometimes without a way of letting them have a more appropriate placement outside our direct contact, just like the metaphor of the apples. The sense that we might fail keeps us in an agitated state and sense that we are some how not as good as, smart as, resourceful as we are “supposed” to be.

 

The solution is both ancient and timely, it is practice. A consistency of return to the relationship we have with ourselves. Permission to receive a thought, choose to act or not and then release the memory of the thought. A practice allows us to transform a plethora of thoughts and memories into seeds of wisdom and remembrance.

 

A practice, a foundation, the courage to consistently return offers us freedom from the dramatic task of trying unsuccessfully to resist a ceaselessly generous and changing universe.

 

When we engage the practice of yoga, bring ourselves back to our essence and Self, we match a universe that is pulsing in recognition of itself as well. We line up to a dynamic universe. WE feel more connected and whole.

 

It may take all the bravery you can summon to bein to feel connected and whole.

 

Join us as we ENGAGE a collective personal practice for 28 days built upon the query of yoga as a “Discipline of Freedom.” We will use the guide of the Yoga Sutras attributed to the ancient sage Patanjali. In our explorations through sacred study of this ancient text, we will probe into the context of our own psychology of practice.

 

We will meet in the electronic world:

 

1. Practice inspirations, and insights into developing a daily practice and meeting with yourself on the mat, in your journal, or on your meditation cushion.
2. Daily contemplation and writing exercises.
3. Worldly exercises to see and shift perspective.

In the quiet spaces of the morning… listen… to the first thought.  YOUR first though the mystical and mythical offering to the courageous goddess of the dawn, Usas.  She does not ask for flowers or flame or incense on her altar… she asks for your first thought.  What is it?  Is it one of love, gratitude, consideration of inspiration or is it a thought that hurts your heart and activation of a life you wish to experience.

 

Can this be the month where your entire focus, our ENTIRE focus woven together of CHOOSING how we SPEAK to ourselves from the very start of DAY!

Balancing the Light

July’s Radical Regeneration… Ease from Meaningful Effort…

July 2011, 28 Days!

28 Days of Personal Practice to tap in, assess, and commit to the flow of regeneration.  The next 28 days are going to be a sustaining energy regeneration retreat!

To renew means to tap into the presence of where you are and where you can nourish, refine, and re-tune.

 

Diving deep into this mid summer’s new moon, we are held in the teetering of the summer’s heat and the new moon’s cool reflection.  This is the time to feel the regeneration and growth of the summer gardens, the blooms of the flowers around us an let that abundant flow of life tip into the cell stream within our own sources and resources.

 

As the light rises, we can align it to where nourishment is needed most and where the light may show us patterns that are not sustainable or, tired, weakened with over use.

 

Life is complicated and difficult at times but one of the highest teachings we can embody is that we are ALWAYS stronger than we thought we would ever be.  That strength, however, must be replenished.  This is the cycle of filing the well-spring of strength.

 

This month’s contemplations, writing ideas, practices, exercises and inspirations will bring us into our activation spaces and ask us to step forward and twist forward to face all that exists before us with the highest degree of reverence and readiness and surrender to an active sense of softness.  We will focus on learning to see all effort as a delight of this and that, now and then, call and response.  Rather than giving and doing to a point of exhaustion, we will learn to receive love, kindness, and generosity of spirit from those who love and believe in us.

 

In the quiet spaces of the morning, or the soft afternoon light, the contemplations will lift the veil of spaces where we self diminish or overlook our needs.  We will be invited into movement of pen, breath, or body as a means to cultivate and meet those needs.

 

The practices will involve yoga asana practices as well as inspirations to take health and fitness to the next level.   This is the perfect month to up level strength to hold the active integrity with which we navigate the world.
